Wood, as a living and natural material, is inherently sensitive to environmental changes. While its properties evolve during the tree's growth, many natural processes continue even after harvesting. Features such as small or large cracks, discoloration, and structural changes are not considered defects but are natural characteristics of the wood, reflecting its unique growth and composition. Palmako’s products are made from high quality Nordic spruce, a wood renowned worldwide for its exceptional quality and properties.
Swelling and shrinking
Swelling and shrinking are natural characteristics of wood and not considered defects. Depending on the humidity, swelling and shrinking may amount to up to 2 % of the total height of the house, which is 54 mm for a 2,7 m high house. Doors and windows are similarly affected by wood's natural growth and shrinkage. If they become difficult to open or close, we recommend adjusting the hinges to improve movement. If needed, the door or window can also be planed to ensure proper functionality. To help reduce the effects of swelling and shrinking, it's important to treat the wood with a suitable treatment product as soon as possible.
Knots in timber
Knots are a natural characteristic of wood, and their size and quantity can vary significantly. Sound knots do not compromise the wood's strength or durability. However, open knots exceeding 10 mm in diameter are not permitted.
Despite our careful quality controls, knots may occasionally fall out of the wood in dry weather. If larger knotholes occur, they can be repaired with suitable pieces of wood or wood putty if necessary.
Resin Pockets
Resin release is a natural characteristic of spruce and pine and is not considered a defect. It may continue for several months after treatment. Small resin pockets are permitted on wall elements and purlins, also on the hidden sides of floorboards, roof boards, and fascia boards. Additionally, resin pockets are always permitted on foundation joists.
Fresh resin can be removed with an alcohol based liquid. If the resin has been left outdoors exposed to the weather for some time, it can be removed with a spatula.
Unplaned surface
Small unplaned areas are allowed on floor and roof boards, provided they can be installed in a way that ensures these features are concealed in the final finish.
